I am no sommelier, but...

Upon seeing Bubble Yum Hersheys Chocolate flavored bubble gum in a gas station convenience store on Summer Avenue, I decided that the time has come for me to start a blog on the subject of artificial flavorings. Yes, now I will finally have the chance to share my extensive musings on the last and most mysterious ingredient on ingredient lists.

When I first laid mine eyes on the package of Bubble Yum Hersheys Chocolate flavored bubble gum, I could hardly believe what I was seeing! With the appetite of a giant and the insatiable curiosity of a puppy, I seized the mysterious package, hurled 60 cents at the clerk, and ripped open the brown wrapping to reveal my destiny. Here is my review:

Pre-chewing, the piece of gum looks disgusting, like a brown block of, dare I say...shit. The smell, however, is pleasant--exactly like the Hershey's powder that I used to make chocolate milk with when I was but a babe.

I had hopes that this gum would a more refined version of Veruca Salt's gum, and that I would be able to reduce my chocolate intake by 50%. However, upon chewing, I did not turn into a giant Hersheys bar, nor did I really feel as if I were eating one. Instead, it felt as if I had put a wad of sugary rubber in my mouth and then poured in a serving of Hershey's syrup. "That's probably how they made it," my wise father remarked. Another tester commented on the "aubergine, vaguely lavender type flavor," and I agree that the gum does taste like purple. On the whole, it's really not so hot. The good thing about chocolate is that it melts away on the tongue, but I've had this gum in my mouth for half an hour, and it's still there. Hershey flavoring just isn't any good if it doesn't melt.

Bubble Yum is owned by Hershey's, which may explain why this gum was invented. I imagine a newly employed factory gnome slipped on some corn syrup, knocking over a ladder which caused a tub of Hershey's syrup to fall into a vat of chewing gum. Or perhaps the head of the bubble gum department and the head of the chocolate department were drunk together on daquiris at an office party.

p.s. Apparently, my brother's friend bought a pack of this gum on clearance, so if you want to taste it, I reccomend you do so before it becomes history.
